May 14 -   34 KM TEAM TIME TRIAL (completed.  see gallery and results)

Date / Time / Loaction: 14 May 2010 / 07:30 start with number pick-up from 06:45 / Lusail circuit service roads

  • Teams: Consist of 3 Riders: can be male, female or mixed (doesn't matter for reasons explained below)

  • Categories: Two - Road and MTB/WW

  • Distance: Road teams will complete 3 laps of the course (that's ~33.9km); MTB/WW teams will complete 2 laps of the course (22.6km)

  • Format: This race will be a handicap format, as follows:

1.        Each team will receive a seed time based upon past ITT performances of team members; where a team member has not previously participated in an ITT, the seed time will be based on the other team members' performances.
2.        Seed times will set the basis for the handicap; the differential of a particular team's seed time to the fastest seed time being designated as the handicap
3.        Each team's handicap will be subtracted from it's actual finish time to yield a net time for the team
4.        Seed times will set the order of start with the fastest going last
5.        Last rider of each team to cross the finish stops the clock for the team
6.        Team with the lowest overall net time is declared the winner

  • Drafting: Members of the same team are highly encouraged to draft each other to share the workload, but drafting another team is prohibited and will incur a 2-minute time penalty.

  • Teams: Either form your own team of 3, or send your name and we (race directors) will place you on an appropriate team.

  • Pre-Registration Required: If interested, please send me your name no later than noon on Wednesday, 12 May.  If you are forming your own team, please also include the other team members' names.

  • Minimum Turnout: 10 teams minimum; if this is not achieved by the pre-registration cutoff, then we will not hold the event!

Following is an example of how the handicap format works:

- If the fastest team has a seed time of 51:00 and Team X has a seed time of 54:30, then Team X's handicap will be 3:30.
- If Team X finishes in 54:23, then the handicap is subtracted from this yielding a net of 50:53.

- Net times will be the basis for final placings.

Note that this is intended to be a FUN competition.  Because the handicap system is used, this will naturally account for differences in riders' abilities, giving an equal chance to all riders, regardless of ability (or gender).  Additionally, note that since this is a time trial, the goal is for all riders to stay together and help with the effort (by taking turns at the front).  In this light, it is probably best for riders of similar abilities to form teams, especially given that the last rider is the basis for the team's finish time.  Overall results will be announced at the Social on 20 May.
